The Magnatone G70 is a vintage lap steel guitar from the 1950s (circa 1954–1958), recognized for its grey pearloid wrap finish, often designed in collaboration with Paul Bigsby. Produced in Inglewood, California, it features a single-coil pickup, solid body construction, simple volume/tone controls, and a 24.5" scale length, offering a warm, resonant, "beefy" tone.
Features & Characteristics:
- Design: Gray Pearloid wrap finish over a solid body.
- Pickup: Single-coil designed by Paul Bigsby with a strong, vocal, and dynamic tone.
- Hardware: Fixed metal bridge and metal nut; often features Kluson tuners and stamped serial number plates on the back of the peghead.
- Controls: Simple single volume and tone controls.
- Period: Commonly manufactured in the mid-1950s (mid-1950s).
- Sound: Known for excellent bass, high resonance, and a "beefy" tone comparable to Rickenbacher steels, but with less top-end sheen.
- Included Accessories: Typically came with a matching Varsity Deluxe amplifier and a "knucklebuster" tweed hardshell case.
These guitars are considered high-quality vintage instruments, frequently admired for their aesthetic pearloid finish and authentic 1950s Nashville-style sound.
